Which apps should I install in my new Shopify store?

by Evan Burford May 01, 2018

Shopify apps are used to add functionality that isn’t already built-in to your Shopify store theme without the need for costly custom coding.

Many premium Shopify themes include functionality such as an Instagram or Twitter feed, an email pop-up, or a mega-menu. However Shopify’s free themes offer limited functionality, so the simplest way to add functionality is by installing an app. And many useful apps are completely free!

So, which Shopify apps should I install?

With hundreds of apps to choose from, the Shopify App Store can be truly overwhelming to newcomers. Many have asked us, “What are the best apps to install in my Shopify store?”. This is our list (and growing) of the apps we recommend most often, and that deliver the most value to new Shopify store owners.

Shopify email marketing apps

Building a mailing list is one of the best ecommerce marketing strategies. You can communicate directly with people who’ve chosen to receive information from you.

Whenever a customer buys from your Shopify store or signs up for your newsletter, their email address is added to the Customers section of your Shopify dashboard. But if you want to send them an email newsletter or special offer, you’ll need to link your store to an email marketing service.

Mailchimp is a very powerful email marketing service and is free for up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month.

The Mailchimp for Shopify app integrates seamlessly with your Shopify store so you can collect email addresses from new customers and signup forms, and add them to an email marketing list in your Mailchimp account.

Before you install the Mailchimp app you’ll need to sign up for a free Mailchimp account on their website: Mailchimp.com

Shopify popup apps

Adding a popup to your store is a very effective way of collecting email addresses to build your email subscription list, particularly if you offer something of value to your customers in exchange for their email address, such as a discount coupon or a free download.

Privy offers a free suite of email capture tools, including exit-intent popups & banners to help grow your email list from your Shopify store, social media channels, mobile, and in-store traffic. Send up to 3000 autoresponder emails each month with their free plan.

Better Coupon Box displays a responsive popup on your homepage, offering a discount to your website visitors for following one of your social profiles or joining your email list. All features of their Free package are forever free.

Sumo helps grow your email list with high-converting opt-in forms: exit-intent popups, banners, discount coupons, cart casino forms, and more. Free for up to 200 subscribers.

Shopify Instagram apps

Instafeed allows you to add your Instagram feed to the homepage of your Shopify for free. Installation requires the addition of a small piece of code to your Shopify theme files.

Snapppt allows you to add a shoppable Instagram feed to the homepage of your Shopify store for free. You’ll need to sign up for a Snappt account first.

If you need help installing the either of these Instagram apps in your store, you can purchase this service from us here: Add an Instagram feed

Shopify live chat apps

A live chat app is a great way to communicate with potential new customers, and to keep existing customers updated.

Messenger for Shopify is pre-installed in your Shopify store. Customers can shop directly from conversations in Messenger, and you can respond to your customers' questions in a single message thread. Customers can also receive automated notifications in Messenger about their orders.

To activate it click the + icon next to the heading “SALES CHANNELS” in your Shopify admin dashboard menu. Click on “Messenger” and follow the instructions to link your Facebook account to your Shopify store. Full instructions here.

Tideo Live Chat app also allows you to add instant chat functionality to your Shopify store without the need to link to a social media account. Their mobile apps ensure you’re always connected to your customers.

Shopify push notification apps

Push notifications are a great alternative to email subscriptions as a way of keeping in direct contact with your customers. When customers opt-in to receive notifications, they’ll receive messages on their devices or web browser with important information when they visit your store.

Push Owl reminds customers of abandoned carts with mobile and desktop notifications. Subscribers can also opt-in for back-in-stock and discount notifications.

Push Nova allows you to send automated personalized messages to customers using web push notifications or Facebook Messenger. Includes abandoned cart and back-in-stock messages, order/delivery status updates and upsells, advanced analytics with testing, Instagram integration and more.

Shopify image resizing app

One of the most common problems with new Shopify stores is inconsistent image sizes and quality, resulting in untidy Collection pages and product grids.

Photo Resize is a very useful app that turns all your product images into a square format with a single click, so the Collection pages of your store look tidy and professional. The app doesn’t change the original image so you can revert to the original format at any time.

Retail Ready Photos gives your product images a professional look with a white background and touchup. Product images are returned within 24 hours. Your first 5 images are free.

Shopify announcement banner app

Quick Announcement Bar by Hextom allows you to add an announcement banner across the top of your website so you can highlight important information, such as free shipping or storewide discounts.

Shopify product reviews app

Customer-generated product reviews are one of the best ways to build trust with potential new customers.

Product Reviews is a Shopify app that allows you to add customer-generated reviews on your product pages. You can also add a page to your store where all your product reviews are featured on a single page. The app also allows you to import product reviews from other sources in a CSV format.

Product Reviews Add-on is an app designed to compliment the Product Reviews app. It allows you to send an automated email to customers after they receive their orders requesting a product review.

Shopify currency switcher app

Bold Multi-Currency allows you to display your product prices in the currency of the country where the customer is viewing your store from. It includes a currency selection widget which you can display on your homepage featuring graphic flag icons of the currencies your store supports.

Shopify help center app

Help Center is a very useful app that adds an accordion-style help menu to your site with help topics that expand when they are clicked. You can see an example here.
