Shopify apps are used to add functionality that isn’t already built-in to your Shopify store theme without the need for costly custom coding.
Many premium Shopify themes include functionality such as an Instagram or Twitter feed, an email pop-up, or a mega-menu. However Shopify’s free themes offer limited functionality, so the simplest way to add functionality is by installing an app. And many useful apps are completely free!

Building a mailing list is one of the best ecommerce marketing strategies. You can communicate directly with people who’ve chosen to receive information from you.
Whenever a customer buys from your Shopify store or signs up for your newsletter, their email address is added to the Customers section of your Shopify dashboard. But if you want to send them an email newsletter or special offer, you’ll need to first link your store to an email marketing service.
Mailchimp is free for up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month.

Klaviyo is a more powerful email marketing service that integrates seamlessly with Shopify and is designed specifically for ecommerce. It includes custom email templates, email autoresponders and flows, custom notification templates, email pop-ups, as well as hosting of your email subscriber lists. It's free for up to 250 subscribers and 500 emails per month.

Adding a popup to your store is a very effective way of collecting email addresses to build your email subscription list, particularly if you offer something of value to your customers in exchange for their email address, such as a discount coupon or a free download.

A live chat app is a great way to communicate with potential new customers, and to keep existing customers updated.
Messenger for Shopify is pre-installed in your Shopify store. Customers can shop directly from conversations in Messenger, and you can respond to your customers' questions in a single message thread. Customers can also receive automated notifications in Messenger about their orders.
To activate it click the + icon next to the heading “SALES CHANNELS” in your Shopify admin dashboard menu. Click on “Messenger” and follow the instructions to link your Facebook account to your Shopify store. Full instructions here.
